Most stupid lamp

I forgot to add one lamp I designed in Linz. Just switch the knob on The Most Stupid Lamp and it´ll burn gently ...
This lamp was also published in the International Yearbook of Design in 1993/94. The lightbulb was directly sandblasted - just wondering wether that would be possible with the bloody LED lightbulbs - well, probably worth investigating ;-)

The Floating Ones

Well, maybe there is a little bit more to say regarding the design of seatings. The design of my double-seater was based on material requirements. This prototype was done with a new material called Zelfo. Zelfo was developed by some friends in Upper Austria and their company Zellform and is basically specially processed waste paper. It gets really hard and is absolutely "green" and sustainable. Therefor the project received The Eco Design Prize in Austria in 1994. The doughnut shape comes from the drying process.
Our friend Jean Attali, a French philosopher, added a text by Gilles Deleuze to it, which has also quite something to do with the upcoming PicWood project (You will soon see why ...):

... this is a very modern conception of the technological object: it refers neither to the beginnings of the industrial era nor to the idea of the standard that still upheld a semblance of essence and imposed a law of constancy ("the object produced by and for the masses"), but to our current state of things, where fluctuation of the norm replaces the permanence of the law; where the object assumes a place in a continuum by variation; where industrial automation or serial machineries replaced stamped forms. The new status of the object no longer refers its condition to a spatial mold - in other words, to a relation form-matter - but to a temporal modulation that implies as much the beginnings of a continuous variation of matter as a continuous development of form.

Prost! Let´s redesign the design process!

I designed "Prost" when I worked in Allesandro Mendinis´studio in Milan in 1991. Two years later it was published in the International Yearbook of Design of 1993 on a double spread. A year later it was produced and distributed by Disain a Viennese design company. It was the time when "ready made design" was about to become "cutting edge design". Droog started to become famous, but for me it meant that something was intellectually somehow concluded. As I was bored in repetition I decided to explore new possibilities of architecture and started with my studies with Pascal at the Architectural Association ... (see Cinematic Architecture, etc.) – a journey which will never end, although I am dealing again more and more with design – or should I say "strategic design?" - or even better: How the organisation structure of the overall design process can be redesigned!

A chair is not a place to sit ...

... but to find a new position!

Der Satz stammt von Jean-Luc Godard und fiel mir während des Menilmontant Projektes auf, im Zuge dessen auch der Turtle Chair entstand (der in einem älteren Post in diesem Blog zu sehen ist). Vermutlich ist Godards´Bemerkung auch das einzig Relevante, was man zum Thema Design von Stühlen überhaupt sagen kann (sofern einem nicht narzistische Regungen in die Quere kommen ...).

Linz Prix files / Prix Ars Electronica Show Design

Nächste Woche gehts wieder nach Linz - Grund genug hier ein Projekt zu posten, das ich in der Zeit realisiert habe als ich eigentlich schon London gelebt habe, an der AA unterrichtet habe und bei Ron Arad gejobbt habe ...
das Ganze fand auf der Baustelle des damals noch nicht fertig gestellten AEC Ars Electronica Centers statt, wo die vier Projekte der Gewinner gezeigt wurden.

Leergut mit Herz Initiative

Immer wieder bekomme ich Anfragen zu dem Charity Konzept "Leergut mit Herz", das ich 2005 entwickelt und veröffentlicht habe. Das (alte) PDF gibts hier. Immer wieder muß ich dann mitteilen, daß diese Initiative nie Wirklichkeit wurde. Kein Geld, kein Interesse von öffentlichen Stellen, usw.
Ich weiß nicht ob die Zahlen aus dem Konzept von 2005 noch immer stimmen. Empirisch lässt sich jedenfalls feststellen, daß es immer mehr Menschen gibt, die im Altglas herumwühlen, daß man immer damit zu kämpfen hat daß auch wirklich alle Flaschen an einem Ort zurückgenommen werden, usw.

Mein neuer Vorschlag daher ist viel einfacher: Einfach mit Kreide ein Herz auf den Boden malen, vorm Haus, an den Glascontainern oder bei den Müllcontainern und alle Pfandflaschen reinstellen.
Das kostet nichts, die Flaschen werden garantiert angenommen, man spart Zeit und es hilft jenen, die es nötiger haben, als man selbst.

Übrigens: Die Flaschen auf dem Foto wurden nur wenige Minuten später von einer älteren Frau abgeholt, bei der man im ersten Moment nicht gedacht hätte, daß sie es nötig hätte. Errare humanum est!

Tipp: Am besten gleich vor der eigenen Haustüre damit anfangen!
